Do You Need a New Air Filter for Your Cooling System?

If you or anyone in your household suffers from allergies or asthma, then you likely already know how important it is to maintain good indoor air quality in your home. However, even if you don’t have a home where allergies are a big deal, poor indoor air quality can still affect you and your home.

While a whole-house air filtration system is the best option to improve your air quality, another factor to think about is the quality of your system’s air filter. When is the last time you changed your cooling system’s air filter? Were you aware that this task should be done every 1–3 months?

The Importance of Regular Changes

We cannot stress how important it is that you change your air filter on a regular basis. While it’s there to protect the inside components of your air conditioning system, should it get too dirty and clogged it will negatively affect the air quality within your home.

Your air conditioner will also struggle to do its job without a properly cleaned or changed air filter. This is because it will have trouble taking in the right amount of air to cool down your home. As a result it will use up more energy than it would have otherwise, and could even fail prematurely from the extra strain.

Do You Need to Upgrade Your Air Filter?

If the air filter within your cooling system is not helping your indoor air quality at all, then you may want to consider an upgrade. There are various options to choose from today, some with a higher MERV (minimum energy efficiency reporting value) rating that may be a good fit for your home.

Another option, as we mentioned above, is upgrading to a whole-home air filtration system, or an air purifier. These are installed separate from your air filter (which still has to be changed) but are very effective at eliminating allergens like pollen and pet dander, and even bacteria.
