How to Keep Your Tankless Water Heater in Good Shape

Tankless water heaters are one of the most cost-effective solutions for delivering hot water into your home. They’re also efficient, compact, and use way less energy than tank water heaters. Tankless water heaters are an excellent investment—and if maintained properly, your tankless water heater can last up to 20 years!

A tankless water heater is undoubtedly an effective way to get hot water into your home. But in order to get the most out of your tankless water heater, you have to ensure that it stays in good shape. This is done through maintenance.

Do Tankless Water Heaters Maintenance?

Absolutely. Regular maintenance of your tankless water heater system is key for the system’s effectiveness and longevity. Just like a traditional water tank system, tankless water heater systems require regular maintenance—though tankless systems can last way longer than tank systems if properly maintained.

So, if tankless water heaters last longer and are more effective than tank systems, why do they still require just as much maintenance? Well, even tankless systems will accumulate scaling over time.

Scaling is the result of a high presence of minerals in hard water. These minerals consist of iron, magnesium, and calcium. When these minerals build up, they create what we call ‘scaling’. While the minerals that lead to scaling are harmless to us, they could cause premature failure for the tankless water heater if you don’t schedule regular maintenance.

Scaling affects the heat exchanger—which is the part responsible for heating the water in the tankless water heater. Scaling could lead to an overworked and ineffective system if not taken care of. Regular maintenance will take care of any scaling.

How Often Do Tankless Water Heaters Need Maintenance?

The timeline for how often you’ll need to schedule maintenance will depend on the level of hard water in your area. For some tankless water heaters, maintenance is only needed every 2-3 years. In areas where there are higher levels of hard water, annual maintenance is necessary.

To see if you have hard water, look for a white, chalky residue surrounding your faucet and drains, a filmy texture on your skin after showering, or white marks on your glassware after having been through the dishwasher. You might even notice your clothes are fading faster than they really should. If you have any of these signs, you may need more regular maintenance on your tankless water heater. You might also want to look into the installation of a whole-house water softener!

Regardless of how often you need to schedule service, the bottom line is that maintenance is the number one most effective way to keep your tankless water heater in good shape.
