Heed These Signs You Need Professional Heating Repair

animated-checklist-with-red-checks

No homeowner should be sitting around worrying about their heating system breaking down at any moment. If this is you, we’re here to help! Of course, this is a lot less likely to be you if you have your heater maintained on a routine basis, and if you know the signs to watch for that indicate your system may need repairs.

But what if you don’t know the signs? Again, we’re here to help. We’ll share some of the most common signs of a heater in disrepair below.

First, we want to encourage you to schedule heating maintenance if you haven’t done so already this fall. This is the best way to fend off the worst of repair needs and/or a sudden and unexpected system breakdown. In fact, professional maintenance can help you avoid up to 85% of the repairs your system might ever need in its lifetime. Plus, maintenance can extend the life of your heater!

Now, onto those signs of disrepair. These are less likely to come as a surprise with maintenance, but there’s always a chance one of these symptoms can happen between tune-ups…

Unfamiliar, Loud, or Weird Sounds

Sometimes, it can be hard to recognize any problems with your heating system if those problems aren’t affecting your comfort yet. A strange noise coming from the cabinet of your furnace might be minor and something you can just brush off, right? If it’s not affecting how hot the air coming through your vents is, you’re probably not concerned.

But strange noises are often the first indicator that something is amiss. Ignoring them gives the problem a chance to worsen.

For example, if you hear a buzzing noise, it may be something is wrong with the electrical connections, which could lead to a potential fire hazard. A screeching sound can indicate a worn-down fan belt that could snap at any moment … and banging or popping can indicate a dangerous problem with the burners.

Higher-Than-Average Utility Bills

Everyone thinks their utility bills are higher than they should be, especially during the time of year we’re using our heaters more and more. But what you should be looking at is a comparison: are your bills a lot higher than they were this same time last year? How about compared to what your neighbors are paying?

If there seems to be a significant spike in your energy bills, it means something in your home is working inefficiently. The heater is a likely candidate since it accounts for over half of all your home’s energy consumption.

Short-Cycling

Short-cycling is where a heater or air conditioner cycles on and off rapidly without completing a full heating or cooling cycle. Not only is short-cycling the symptom of an existing potential problem, but it can cause other problems and exacerbate wear and tear, shortening the overall lifespan of the heating system.

These examples are just a few of the strange noises you might hear coming from a heater in disrepair. If you hear anything outside of the normal day-to-day operational noises from your heater, call our team.
