two-techs working-on-acOne of the most popular questions we get as HVAC professionals is how homeowners can improve their system’s efficiency in a way that it will cost them less to run their air conditioners, without sacrificing comfort. Considering how uncomfortable it can get outside during our summer seasons, this is a perfectly reasonable question.

And we have good news! First off, there are a number of services you can have done that will help your air conditioner perform better, plus prevent repairs. Take maintenance, for example. Annual (or biannual, if you have a heat pump) tune-ups will ensure that your system works as efficiently and effectively as its meant to for as long as it’s meant to.

You can also help improve AC efficiency by performing a couple minor maintenance tasks on your own, like changing out the air filter and making sure the outside unit of your air conditioner is free of debris that can impact airflow. Here are a couple more things you can do that you might not have considered:

The Unique Needs of a Ductless AC System

April 12th, 2021

ductless-system-air-handlerFor homeowners who want efficient and effective cooling and heating, there is a singular option that is growing in popularity: the ductless system. Rather than operating through ductwork connected to an indoor air handler and evaporator unit, a ductless mini-split breaks up the indoor unit and blower fans to independently distribute conditioned air into each room. Small air handlers are mounted—typically high up on the walls—and each one can be set to a specific temperature.

Perhaps you’ve seen these types of systems. They’re often found in newer office buildings, doctors’ offices, and hotels. There are several advantages to going ductless, including increased efficiency—especially during the cooler months. But if not installed properly, the unique needs of a ductless AC system could leave you needing repairs or even replacement. Read on to learn more!

Clogged Drains? Here’s When to Call a Plumber

March 15th, 2021

sink-drain-with-water-flowing-downIf we had to guess, we’d imagine that you don’t spend a whole lot of time thinking about the drains in your home, or the rest of your plumbing system for that matter. That is, you don’t think about them until something goes wrong—like a clogged drain.

Sometimes it’s possible to resolve clogged drains on your own. No, we aren’t talking about reaching for that bottle of store-bought chemical drain cleaner you keep under the sink—that’s bad news (more on that in a bit). We’re talking about superficial drain clogs you can relieve with a plunger and a little bit of “elbow grease.” Another step you can take if your drain clog results in a smelly drain is to wash a little baking soda and vinegar down with hot water to help alleviate it.

If you’re still experiencing problems after these steps, that’s when it’s time to call us for professional drain cleaning.

Does Your Tankless Water Heater Need Maintenance?

March 1st, 2021

tankless-water-heaterThe short answer to this is “yes,” but don’t worry, we’re going to explain below.

The conventional storage tank water heater is large, always pretty noticeable, and can even be a bit noisy, right? In other words, the average homeowner who has one of these systems probably knows that it needs attention and care by way of professional maintenance. After all, scaling can have a big impact on the water heater. It allows mineral buildup (calcium and magnesium mainly, but also iron in some cases), that creates problems with water pressure, temperature, and even eventual corrosion. As part of professional maintenance, tank water heaters require occasional flushing.

But a tankless system is different, right? So why does it need maintenance? Well, for the same reasons a conventional storage tank water heater does, actually. Read on as we uncover the impact of scaling on a tankless system, and therefore why tankless water heaters need maintenance.

Sure, having a great heater starts with selecting the right one for your home (size matters), and having it professionally installed by trained professionals. But there are additional steps you can take to improve the cost-effectiveness of this system.

First, did you have professional maintenance done before this heating season began? If not, it’s not too late! Maintenance allows our technicians to thoroughly inspect, clean, and adjust the components of your furnace or heating system so it performs as it should, and as safely as it should. Maintenance also extends the lifespan of your heater. A well-cared for heater has the ability to last 10–15 years whereas one that skips maintenance may only last half of that.
